Meet Ladi Kwali : The Woman On The Nigeria ₦20 Note

I don't know if this is the right section to post this but I think the woman is a celebrity

Meet Ladi Kwali (1925 - 1984), the woman on the Nigeria ₦20 note. She was born in Kwali, Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was a common occupation among women. She was so skilled that her work became known in mainland Europe, Britain and the Americas. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, her work was displayed in London at the Berkeley Galleries. She became Nigeria's best-known potter, was awarded a doctorate and was made MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1963 despite not having a formal education.

So inspiring....Something worth emulating.

10 Common Grammatical Blunders You Should Endeavour To Avoid

10 Common Grammatical Blunders You Should Endeavour To Avoid

As humans, we learn new things everyday. Only a dead man that doesn't learn and the foolish man picks offence unnecessarily when he's corrected!  I'm not perfect and you, yes, you over there, reading this, can't be too. We all learn but it's good you share the knowledge you have because there could be others out there who might need whatever you have to share. You can also learn from what others have to share. Below are 10 common grammatical blunders we make in Nigeria when speaking:

1) 'Who is that'? People often ask this question when they hear a knock on their door. The proper question to ask should be: 'Who is it'? This is because you don't know who's at your door. It's even preferable to ask: 'Who be that'? At least, we know you are speaking Pidgin English

2) Answering a question with just a simple YES or NO only. This is very wrong. Example1: 'Do you work on Sundays'? Instead of answering 'No', you should say 'No, I don't'. Example2: 'Do you know him'? Instead of saying just 'Yes' if you know who the first speaker is referring to, you should say 'Yes, I do'. That makes it a complete answer.

3) Using the word 'offer' in school subjects. Many teachers make this terrible mistake!!! You would hear statements like 'My students don't offer Literature' or 'If you know you are not offering Government, leave the class'. WRONG!!! Students don't OFFER subjects; they TAKE subjects! To offer means to give or present something to someone. Does it mean you are presenting something to Literature or Government?   Naija teachers, una no go kill person!

4) Using a plural verb for collective pronouns: 'Everybody ARE coming'. EVERYBODY is a collective pronoun. Collective pronouns (Collective nouns inclusive), carry a singular verb which is 'IS' and not 'ARE'. Many people also make the mistake of adding 'S' to staff, when addressing a collection of workers in an organisation. Don't say 'All the staffs in this firm'. Instead, say 'All the staff in this firm'.

5) 'I want to buy COOK egg' (Lol, not even cooked egg! ). It's a common blunder when we go to the neighbourhood shop. Bros, it's either you are buying a boiled egg or one that is not cooked (raw) because even the one that's fried is cooked!

6) 'The shoes do not size me'. Wrong!!! 'SIZE', in this context, is a noun! It cannot function as a verb here. The correct way to say this is: 'The shoes do not fit me' or 'The shoes are not my size'. You can still say 'The shoes are over-sized or under-sized'.

7) 'My stomach or my head is paining me'. WRONG! It's not only a terrible mistake to make grammatically; it's also a useless statement!!! Why add ING to PAIN to create a verb that's not only useless but non-existent? You can say 'My stomach aches' or 'I feel pain in my stomach'.

The following are more of Oral English (correct pronunciation; that's speaking right).

Pronouncing FEBRUARY as 'FEBUARY'. When you pronounce this word, the 'U' and 'A' are to be silent. Pronounce it as if you are saying 'FEBRY'.

9) When you pronounce WEDNESDAY, the 'D' should be silent. It should come as 'WENSDAY'.

10) When you pronounce POLICE, the 'O' should be silent. It should come as 'Plice'.

Godbless!

Nigeria’s 2016 Worst Performing Governors

Nigeria’s 2016 Worst Performing Governors

Here is the list of Nigeria's worst performing Governors of 2016. A lot of factors were used in getting to the above.

1. Yahaya Bello of Kogi state

Kogi state, once Nigeria’s seat of capital is now in ruins. From Ejule to Lokoja and beyond, from infrastructure to the economy, the state’s government has done little or nothing in shaping up the lives of its citizens. There are no good roads in the state, no viable commercial activities; state government paid staff and pensioners hasn’t been paid in months; to say that the governor is a monumental failure will be a ‘light praise.’

2. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State

The senator turned governor is amongst the worst performing governors in Nigeria. With all the huge funds accrued to to the state, Delta state capital Asaba in terms of infrastructural development is very backward. There are no good roads in the town, no drainage, no light and No water. The government has also done nothing in salvaging the precarious security situation of the state. Delta state has always been plagued with bad leaders whom are after their pockets. Mr Okowa should map out ways in dealing with the insecurity and embarking on massive infrastructural projects in the oil rich state.

3. Samuel Ortom of Benue state

Benue state governor has gotten himself a slot in the league of the worst performing governors. Since his inception into office, the ex-minister has not initiated or executed any viable project in his state. More so, the marauding Fulani herdsmen have been killing the people of the state in their thousands, and homes and villages been sacked. The governor has done nothing in securing his people against the killers. Until he initiates policies that will bring in goodies to the state, he will be in our list of worst performing governors in Nigeria.

4. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti

The Ekiti state governor has recently been in the news and media on issues bothering the wife of the president. The governor who believes in stomach infrastructure politics have not been doing what a state chief executive ought to be doing. Instead, he choose to do the work of his party’s spokesperson. He attacks the president at any slightest opportunity instead of bringing up projects that will uplift the state. Ekiti is the poorest and the least developed state in the southwest and one of the poorest In Nigeria and as long as the current governor continues to ignore embarking on capital projects in the state, it will remain so for a very long time to come.

5. Abdulfatah Ahmed of kwara state

The governor of the north central state is not experienced on the issues of state leadership and good governance. One is expected that the state with abundant material and human resources should naturally be leading the pack, but it is not so. Instead, he chooses to become the official stooge of Nigeria’s senate president, Mr Saraki. Since he assumed office years back, the state has not experienced any significant growth that translated into the well-being of its citizens. Recently, news of foods being stolen from fire in the state was in the media, leading many to conclude that the hunger in the state was in massive scale. They are all correct. Ahmed needs to step up his game and better the lives of his people.

6. Darius Ishaku of Taraba state

Some would say that the man is taking his time resting after the narrow defeat he gave his rival Mrs Aisha Alhassan. The governor does not have what it takes to lead a state. I suggest he arms himself with advisers and commissioners that knows what it takes to deliver. No single road has been built in Jalingo or anywhere else in the state. The healthcare rating of the state has dropped, and the Education sector is in near comatose. Security has also worsened, and like his neighbor counterpart Mr Ortom, Darius Ishaku is clueless in tackling insecurity and other economic downturns in the state.

7. Tanko AL-makura of Nasarawa

Nasarawa state should be one of the best states in Nigeria in Nigeria in terms of revenue drive/generation and infrastructural growth, taking its proximity to Abuja as an advantage, but reverse is the case. It is one of the poorest state, north of Nigeria. The governor does not know what it means to prioritize needs. A governor that once wanted to embark on the construction of a cargo airport in the state without standard markets and commercial activities taking place in it. State and local government workers haven’t been paid for months in the state, and no viable project have been commissioned in the state since 2014; one wonders where all the revenue accrued to the state goes. Tanko is one of the governors that squanders federal government allocations on frivolities.

8. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state

Talking about total cluelessness in governance, The Enugu state governor sits on-top. The governor of the coal city state has done virtually nothing since he came into power a year ago. Whatever there is now in Enugu state was done by his predecessors. He is said to be the most ‘’dormant’’ governor in the southeast of NIGERIA. The vibrant capital of the old eastern region, touted to be the entertainment hub of the southeast is now turning to a shadow of its old self. Watchers have started speculating about the possibility of the governor in securing a second term for himself come 2019.

9. Shettima of Borno State

Mr shettima presides over the affairs of the state ravaged by terrorism and insurgency. Since Nigerians (and the world) is more interested in getting to stop the insurgency, his non-performance and cluelessness have been overlooked. The economic and commercial activities in the once Home of Peace is now at a stand-still, and nothing has been done by the governor. His reasons for his non performance is Insecurity, but that shouldn't be the case. Shettima should draw up reconstruction plans and makes sure he sticks his nose into it, till total reconstruction is achieved. He should leave fighting terrorism for the federal government and focus on developmental plans.

N/B: As a blogger, I've been to all 36 states of Nigeria and including the FCT. The compilation was based on what I saw on ground and all other relevant yardsticks.

MTN Begins 4G LTE Internet Services Trial In Nigeria

MTN Nigeria’s subsidiary, Visafone, has
commenced the test-run of its fourth generation
long term evolution (4G LTE) internet technology
service for smartphone users.
MTN said in a statement on Thursday that the roll-
out of the 4G LTE services would help provide
superior high-speed internet services in major
cities to empower Nigerians with the latest mobile
broadband technology.
MTN executive, Amina Oyagbola, said the
company was determined to deepen broadband
penetration in the country.
“Our recent license acquisition further
demonstrates our faith in the future of Nigeria,”
Mrs. Oyagbola said. “We believe in supporting the
positive transformation of Nigeria and we have
demonstrated this belief through the level of our
investment since 2001, which currently stands at
approximately $16 billion.”
General Manager, Consumer Marketing, MTN
Nigeria, Richard Iweanoge, said the specifics of
the test-run and subsequent launch of the 4G LTE
technology would be launched with the sole
objective of providing Nigerians with “the best,
fastest and most competitive ICT services for all
stakeholders”.
He said MTN Nigeria was pleased to set the pace
and breaking new boundaries with the test run,
which would be available for now for only
Visafone customers, currently provisioned on the
800 MHz band.
“When we roll-out fully, especially with our 2.6
GHz spectrum, the launch will help to enhance
customer experience for our over 60 million
subscribers, while ensuring greater coverage,
access, affordability and ultimately a smart
lifestyle for everyone,” he said.
He said the 4G LTE roll-out was a demonstration
of the company’s commitment to accelerate the
achievement of the country’s targeted broadband
penetration by 2018
